I don't know much about these things. My daughter was driving our old Volvo home the other day (1987 740GLE B230F with 4-speed & elec. o/d, 289,000 miles)when smoke began to come out of the crack around the front of the steering wheel - not the dash, but right by the wheel. Then it quit running, and would not restart. It still won't, although it turns over briskly. I can't find anything burnt or anything that looks wrong under the dash. The warning lights don't work, when you turn the key on, except for the seatbelt one, I believe it is. There are no blown fuses. When I removed fuse 5, the door alarm went off, even though the door was closed. I loosened the hose/fuel rail junction (that pair of nuts above the intake manifold that you have to hold one while loosening the other. Fuel squirted out under pressure. When I loosened it and turned the engine, no fuel came out. I removed the hose completely, and no fuel came out when turning the engine. I put it back, removed plug one and held it agains the manifold while my wife cranked the engine and saw no spark. The radio and the lights work. I took the case off the FI relay and plugged the relay back in, turned the key on, and the relays in there didn't do anything. One of them, I believe, usually closes when you turn the key on. I cranked it and manually closed them, but it didn't start of course - no spark!! When I held the back one closed for a second (the one nearest the shifter,) I could hear the front pump running. The rear one is too quiet for me to hear. I don't believe the injectors are clicking as they should when the engine is being turned over. What is wrong with this thing? Thanks......Bake
