I took earlier recommendations not to try rebuilding my ZF steering rack, and glad that I did, considering the apparent simplicity of the step that's stuck me.
What's the trick to get the pinion back into the receptor on the end of the steering column? With the U-Joint flopping, the clumsiness of the rack, and the tight fit of the friction joint, I can't finagle it.
Is it easier to maneuver the pinion in with the rack totally unattached? Do you somehow "paralyze" the U-Joint? Should I bolt the rack down and snap the joint to push the receptor on? Has anyone had luck putting a wedge of somekind into the flange on the U-Joint to open it up? I couldn't jam a flathead drill bit in there enough to stick. Work from the top or bottom? Lubricants? I was really floundering out there today and wish I could drive it to a shop. With that option out, I need your help!
Thanks for any advice, Andrew
