CBV gasket shot--is it the cause or the symptom of the problem? 700

Hi,

We took a trip to NC in my car this past weekend, and much of the drive was in the mountains. My 87 760 Ti+ was carrying more than it had since I've owned it--that is, six people's luggage and, a couple of times, six people. So it was overweight.

The mountain drive lasts about three hours, and during that time, on the way home, every time the turbo spooled, we heard TWO whistles instead of the conventional one. At first I thought it was a hose, but when I checked it out, it sounded like it was coming from the turbo. I thought the turbo was going bad.

The noise got progressively worse over the last couple of days, but sounded more and more like a vacuum leak somewhere.

So I checked all the hoses, and there are no holes or bad seals. I'm in the process of putting it all back together when I see the CBV wiggling. I look at it and realize 1) the gasket is completely blown in half and 2) one of the bolts is missing.

What gives? Obviously that would be the cause of the vacuum sound--and the stuttering and missing whenever the turbo spooled as of yesterday.

But was that the CAUSE of the problem or the SYMPTOM? Last time I took the CBV off, I tightened it down pretty well...what could've made it do that?

Thanks BB
