access to the M46 4th gear OD switch 200 1986

My M46 OD (86 DL Wagon) is no longer functioning reliably; I used the methods recommended here to troubleshoot the system - relay is good, shift lever switch is good, but the red wire doesn't show continuity to ground when the shift lever is in 4th gear. I thought "A Ha! broken wire!", but then on the road this morning the OD worked intermittently when I jiggled the shift lever - so now I think likely culprit is the switch itself, maybe in tandem with an iffy wire.

Question: is the switch accessible from inside the car, if I remove carpet / rubber shifter boot, or is it only accessible from 'down below'? Does the tranny have to drop to get to it?
