Junk Yard review: 12 September 2004

Harry's U Pull-it, Hazelton, PA
http://www.autoelectric.ru/auto/volvo/740/1989/740-89.htm

Big. About 3-4 football fields side-by-side. That's just the Foreign cars.
240's and 740's plentiful
Typical milages: 118,000 - 223,000
Typical reason car is there: varies. Saw equal mix of things like body rust, crash damage, and no apparent cause (probably mechanical)
Years from a '78 240 to a '92 240. Several '84 - 90-ish 740/760's Two- or three 850's, well picked. No 900's nor Bertones.

Nice thing: Every car is raised up on stilts made of old wheels.
Nice thing #2: They have rental wagons, engine hoists (but I'd never pull one of those monsters around!)
Nice thing #3: Vending machines and hot food stand. Published price list. Good organization upon check in/check out. Security guard. Toolbox check.
No jacks, animals, torches, weapons, open shoes or children allowed.
All fluids drained.
$2.00 admission

Observations:

1. Lots of Volvos. Few German cars. Mostly Jap stuff: Nissan, Honda, etc.
2. Body parts plentiful
3. Electrical stuff scarce. No AMMs. One or two FI ECU's. Few Relays.
4. A few instrument panels
5. Egine mostly picked over. Plenty of 530 heads. A few high milage blocks.
6. No manual transmissions
7. A few auto transmissions
8. Interiors: mostly crap (soiled and torn)
9. AC parts: a few Deisel-Kiki R-12 compressors. Some condensers & lines.
10. Scarce plastic pieces, headlights, or related trim
11. Brake stuff too rusted to be trusted
12. Wheels scarce. Many replaced with emergency donuts, or rusted stock steel

Summary:

I went looking for #007 AMMs, an spare FI ECU for my 740 turbo; a servicable AC compressor, condenser and condenser fan. Also needed center console plastic for my 240, plus a pair of wiper arms.

No Amm's. No ECU's. Questionable AC compressors/condensers. Most condenser fans siezed. Could have pulled one or two.

Came away with: Pair of wiper arms ($4.20 each) and a plastic tool box for some unkown car which fits over the center-mounted spare wheel in the trunk ($8.40)

Best find: Front (only front) ipd sway bar on a '90 240 ($10.50) A turbo model rear sway, also.

Second best find: Two 3-row metal radiators for 700 series. Pulled one, but it poured out a chocolate milk liquid. Made in China.

Other rad was made in Indonesia (but came with a "Lifetime Gurantee"!). I left it. Two weeks ago I would have grabbed it, but I just installed a new MTC brand from FCP Groton.

Conclusion:

Harry's advertises a big selection and how much acreage they occupy. But size and selection dont translate into good stuff.

In the end, what I have to show for it amounts to nothing special. I happened to be going by there, so, I didn't feel the pain of disappoinent as someone traveling in special might.

Still, I overheard guys talking about having driven hours. And I did see several two-man teams pulling engines. Not Volvo, but Jap.

You can still get a good door, maybe a fener and some pieces of glass.

Over the years I have noticed the supply of Volvo goodies drying up. What has yet to be crushed finds its way to places like Harry's.

Everything is well picked-over. One step from the crusher.

Maybe the market strategy is toward the Japan econo-boxes.
