Voltmeter shows battery lower than it actually is. . . . 700 1987

1987 760 turbo, the car won't start any more after having stopped on it's own. At the same time the voltmeter in the instrument cluster is now showing the battery to be at somewhere around 10 volts. But checking the battery with a multimeter shows that the voltage is higher (~12.4 V). Are these problems related? They came about at the same time. The engine turns over alright, but it just won't start. Battery cables maybe?
