Brake trouble on the horizon? 140-160 1972

I'm a relative newcomer to classic cars, and am wondering if I have a warning sign on my hands. The brakes on my '72 164E work fine most of the time, but sometimes I find that I need to "pump" them -- at times, the pedal simply feels like it's giving out, so I step off, allow the pedal to rise back up, and pump again. I've done some research and have found complaints in some '70s write-ups regarding "brake fade"...I'm not even sure if I'm using this terminology correctly -- any help?
