Exhaust pipe manifold to cat conv 200 1989

Fellow brickboarders.

1989 240. Are the heat insulators on the exhaust pipe, manifold to cat conv' essential.
Volvo dealer states that the pipe is no longer offered with insulators.
My gut feel is that Volvo engineering spent a lot of effort to install those insulators on (I have spent lot of time keeping them quiet)

Q. what effect is noticed if the insulators are not installed.
