Hey All,
For some time my steering system has been very harsh feeling, just going over bumps sends back more feedback than I feel in my wifes newer '92 240, and has been generally more harsh than other 240's I've had.
Lately I have developed a shudder at 45-55mph. It began to occur just prior to getting newer tires and having them balanced. The front has all new bushings, 3 year old tie rods and ball joints. I don't detect any play in the inner or outer tie rods yet when I reach the speeds above I get a shudder with newly balanced tires....?
I began to suspect the steering linkage but I don't ssee any play, the other day while under the car doing and oil change I grabbed the steering rod and gave it a twist and it looks like there is play within the rack.
Is there anyway to adjust this play out or should I go with a new rack if indeed this is the problem. I can get a rack from a '90 up at a junk yard tommorow if I need to. Will it fit OK?
I'm willing to grab a rack from a newer car and give it a whirl. I have been having a hard time analyzing this problem but I don't find play anywhere else but the rack itself.
