760 speedometer and cruise control 700 1986

The speedometer on my '86 760 turbo wagon sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. It may work for several miles, then just drop to zero. Later it may start reading again. When the speedometer is working, so is the cruise control. If the speedometer isn't working, the cruise control won't engage. Any idea as to the root of my problem?
