Tightening the turbo to mani bolts 700 1989

I was all ready to repair a gap between the turbo and the exhaust manifold, when the ignition module quit on the interstate last week. Between the towing and the repair bill, I got skinned, but at least I have a running car again.

The gap is barely the size of a very cheap business card- I can almost force one into the gap. I have read the FAQ, and it talks of total R&R to fix it, and a mechanic talks of machining the mating surfaces. But I am wondering if I can loosen the exhaust manifold nuts a bit, enough to slip a wrench in between the block and the manifold (what size are those turbo to mani. bolts, anyway- 13mm?) and tighten them down enough to get by until spring. The manifold nuts have come loose, and I have been spraying them with penetrant, so I think they will turn without risking a broken stud.

Anyone have advice to offer to someone trying to do it on the cheap?

Thanks in advance

Rick
