Yellow Peril going again, idles fast, rich and rough 140-160 1973

I set up a fuel pump test stand after the pump I was trying to use quit.
I found that one that WAS leaking is not now leaking and pumps OK so I put
it back on and have good fuel pressure if the operator remembers to turn the
key to the back part of the "run" position rather than just letting go when
it starts. BTW the fuel pump is "hotwired" to the wiper motor. I decided
to leave it hooked up there until we get more serious issues ironed out.
When we started it up it was idling at about 1500. I unhooked the hoses
one by one and put my finger over the manifold fitting hoping something on
one of them might be leaking but none made any difference. I unhooked the
electric auxiliary air valve and plugged both connections on the manifold and
that probably dropped it from 1500 to 1400 rpm. The throttle butterfly seems
to be closing completely and the overrun valve on it is soldered shut. The
manifold is recently installed with a new gasket and seems to be OK, so I have
not discovered where the excess air is coming from. Your guesses will be
appreciated.

Also it is running VERY rich and very stinky black smoke. Since the screw-
plug in the back end of the manifold air pressure sensor was loose, I took
it out and diddled with the screw which was at one end of its travel. I
screwed it to the other end of its travel, which brought the idle speed
down to about 1000 rpm, running fairly rough. Timing seems to be good and
ignition dwell is OK. I cleaned the trigger points in the distributor a couple
weeks ago. I'm considering the following:
1. Hook up one or two colortune windows to see what the flame color is.
2. See if the control on the ECU will lean the idle any
3. See if adjustments on the MAP sensor will lean it out any
4. Study the D-jet manual that my GOOD friend Kåre sent to me.

It seems really odd to me that it has the symptoms of an air leak but I can't
find any apparent locations, especially with the idle adjustment closed tight,
the throttle closed and the Aux Air Valve ports plugged.

Further it seems pretty odd that it should manifest air leak symptoms and
still be running SO rich. BTW fuel pressure is constant at 28 psi.

I think we are pretty close to having this car driveable but it is beginning
to wear me out! Your experience shared will be GREATLY appreciated!
