engine dies suddenly 1986 740na 700

The engine on my sons car has just started to suddenly die. The car will be running fine then all of a sudden die (as if the key was just turned off-no sputtering). Can be at idle or driving, can take seconds after starting or after minutes of driving. Usually starts right back up. However he said a couple of times when it wouldn't start back up immediatly it backfired. I have pulled the FI relay and resoldered a couple of cracked solder joint and exchanged the distributor with a parts car. Still the same results. Any more ideas?
