'87 740 GL wagon rear shocks replacement problems 700 1987

I tried replacing my rear shocks on my 1987 740 GL wagon. I had no problem with the left rear; the replacement shock (Gabriel for $20 each) went in pretty easy.

But the right rear I couldn't get it to slip in no matter what I tried. In the morning when I looked at it again and compared it to the old shock, I realized that the upper mount had reduced clearance on the right rear as compared to the left rear. Yet Gabriel had both shocks with the same extended bushing.

When I called Gabriel, they were totally unaware of the problem. I'm not about to pay $100 for the Bilstein shock (which is lower quality with only a plastic piston sheath imo). I'm going to have to machine the extended bushing flush in order to make it fit in the right rear slot.

Anyone else had this problem? Let me know how you resolved it.
