Yesterday my wife called while driving to work and told me that CHECK ENGINE light on the dash came and stayed on. Since she did not notice anything different in the behavior of the car she completed her trip without interruption. Last night I was going to pull the code using my laptop with OBD-II software. To my surprise the software did not give me the trouble code number. It seemed to me the software saw that something was wrong, but it could not properly read the code: I got P0000 back from the software. Also, I was not able to reset the CHECK ENGINE light. This is the first time this happened. In the past I was always able to read the codes and then reset them. My guess is that the software installed on my laptop is only for reading standard OBD-II codes related to engine management and powertrain. I have a feeling that the new CHECK ENGINE code is not of that variety. But what else could this be? I don't want to go to dealer and pay them $90 for 10 minute work just for reading this damn error code.
