I get this clunk/thunk sound when I come to a hard-stop, which seems to originate from under the car. It's been there for years now. I Initially thought it was a transmission problem, but it continued even after I got a Volvo-rebuilt ZFHP22 installed 7 years ago (which has worked just great so far).
I've always felt it might be the soft-engine mounts, but I read a post recently from someone indicating s/he continues to hear the clunk even after changing engine and tranny mounts.
Another poster suggested strud-rod-cone bushings might be the culprit, but I've recently changed those and the noise is still there.
Could it be related to the drive-shaft or axle ? Any ideas ?
