is the a way of telling what year an m47 tranny is?

my wife's 90 245 needs to have the m47 replaced,I have heard the 87's were not good transmissions,there are a bunch of numbers on this other m47 that I was thinking of using as a replacement,but if it is an 87 I shouldn't use it or what? anyone shed any light on this predicament? blessings....kris
