Door panel rebuild 1800 1969

My door panels and kick panels need rebuilding due to moisture damage of the fiber board backing under the vinyl. The vinyl itself is in pretty good shape. I was going to carefully remove the vinyl and use the old fiber board as a pattern to make new ones.

My questions are:

1. has anyone else done this or is there a better way?
2. anybody know of a source for replacement fiberboard backing?
