cold start problems 700 1989

I had to put a used engine in my '89 740 GLE(B234F 16 valve). Now it doesn't want to start in the mornings. It is acting just like a carburetor type engine that needs to be choked. Once I do get it started after only a couple of minutes, the trouble goes away. IE - I can turn it off and restart it without trouble as long as the engine is warm but after it cools off completely, problems starts all over again. Any help appreciated.
