940 Probs - hesitance & strange idle. HELP 900

My 940 2.0l 16v 1990 non turbo estate is causing me some problems. By looking at previous posts and FAQ's i know this has been answered before - must be a common fault. However is u could bear with me and answer me that would be great.
- It is an intermitent fault - the idle drops below 500 and then the car lifts the revs itself up to above 1000 they then continue to fluctuate like this between 400 - 1200 for a while often dropping so low the engine stalls. however it seems that as soon as i had some gas it seems to stop.
- When driving there is often a period of hesitance between accelerating and the car responding its a small jolt before it accelerates as normal.
I dont know if it is connected but when i take my foot completley off the accelertor it seems to jolt similar to the above effect on accelertion more than it used to?.
I took the car to my local respected mechanic who said the effects never occured for him even after he left it for a cold start and after a brief look under the bonnet nothing seems out of place. he suggested a fuel system cleaner by STP the back of the bottle certainly suggested it could solve my symptoms. this has since been run through but the problems still occur from time to time!?!?!?
I have it booked back in so if i had some feedback from here to suggest to him that would be great!
PS my car idles at just below 500 ( when the above is not happening ) on a good day- seems a bit low anyway???

Thanks in advance!
Dave.
