My 1990 745 16v 4 sp + o/d started slipping recently. The car has 358,000km and the clutch was replaced about 2 years ago. 1st 4 gears are fine and the o/d engages / disengages perfectly. If I accelerate hard in top gear with overdrives engaged (at about 3000rpm), I can get the o/d to slip. The tranny fluid was replaced just before I bought the car in 2001 with 315,000km on it. I have a service receipt for that but I suppose it could be bogus. In the hope that a tranny flush will fix the problem, I plan to replace the fluid with ATF type F (non-Dexron) as recommended in the FAQ.
My Question: Is the o/d likely cooked or is it worth trying a simple tranny flush?
FWIW, the car has a a type J o/d and a cast iron tranny that looks like it came from an older car, perhaps a 240. There is a stub where the old speed sensor used to come out. So it is not original since this car came with an aluminum tranny AFAIK. As a collorary question, could the gear ratios of the cast iron tranny be different than the aluminum one?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Bill
