R-sport tach 140-160 1974

Installed an R-sport rally cluster in my '74 144GL. The tach does not work. There are two bare spade connectors in the center. The one on the right is marked" V" the one on the left is "R" or "S". I tried both. With the wire from the coil connected to one the needle goes slowly up to a grand when I rev it...very little movement at all. With it connected to the other ... nothing.
I am wondering if the tach is bad or if I am missing somthing.
There are two spade connectors outside the bare spade conncetors. One is to the right and marked "12"with a black and a red wire conected to it, the other is to the left and marked" -" with a black and a green wire connected to it.
The gas gauge works. The volt meter works, the water temp gauge works, the blinker works. The oil pressure gauge is not hooked up. The spedo is not hooked up. The other idiot lights at the bottom are not working.
Any advice, trouble shooting tips is much appreciated.
