Do not want to overhaul tranny again. Please help! 700

You know I thought twice about submitting this but I have no other option left.
I have this montero 1995 3.0L
The gears do not shift (first)untill I let the gas paddle go .Then it shifts.
After that it use to run fine. But not any more. It run on the 2nd gear all the time onece shifted from first. Before this occure I have adjusted the kikdown cable. But that do not fix the problem any more.
Please help. I wish they were build like Volvo's.
