crazy electrical problems 700 1987

87 volvo 740tic sedan w/ '89 b230ft & t3
4 speed manual + overdrive

I got this car recently, so I'm still learning about it as I fix it up.

I went out to start my car today and the entire electrical system seems to have gone crazy. for example when I use a turn signal, the corresponding dash light goes spaztic while the signal relay buzzes. If I try to start the car my continuous injection system relay buzzes in like its playing jeopardy, but the starter doesnt seem to do anything. most everything else elecrical is having problems too, and is usually accompanied by strange buzzing noises coming from one place or another.

The battery died, so i'm assuming theres a short somewhere. I did a thorough check of all the wiring and fuses I could get to, and it all looks like its in pretty good shape. I only found a few places where the wiring was exposed on some individual wires, so I fixed those places. It didn't make any difference though.

are there any key areas I should check out that could create a problem like this? Any ideas? thanks
