Continuing Alternator problem 200 1987

Briefly, '87 wagon with new battery which keeps going flat. I ran a jumper from the stator (D+) to a switched fuse, and when I cranked it up, the voltage at the battery kicked up nicely. I spent the next 48 hours patting myself on the back, then my wife called to tell me her car was dead again. Charged it back up, cranked it up,and guess what, the voltage isn't kicking up any longer. D+ terminal reading something like 11.9 volts. So I took the jumper loose. Suddenly the D+ voltage jumped to 14 volts. But the voltage at the battery doesn't change. Apparently, I burned something with my bright idea about the jumper. Anyone have an idea what I tore up?

Thanks.
