HELP. Can't put back in the strut rod after installing poly bushings 900

Just now I tried to put on the ploy strut rod bushing from FCP Groton and got into some unexpected problem. Everything went fine for the disassembly, but when I tried to put it on, I could not get the rear bolt hole on the strut rod aligned with the hole on the bracket. I pried with a wrench left and right for half an hour and could not put the bolt in. It seems the poly bushing is a bit too thick. I already tightened the bolt on the front end of the strut rod...so is that necessary to detach the swaybar link or lower ball joint to move the strut rod? It was not off too much, about 2/3 hole but I could not get them aligned.
Another problem, is that steel pipe coming with the bushing kit necessary? I tightened the bolt without putting in the pipe and the bushing squeezed onto the strut rod so tight that there was no room at all to put in the steel pipe.
The car is now parked on street undrivable, any input is appreciated. Thanksh
