auto trans 'burning' or leaking oil? 200 1991

Still adding fluid to the 91 245SE, but I can't see any leakage. Does this only happen when driving? Even so there is no evidence on the underbody (but the engine oil has been blowing out the cap, think I fixed that, a plugged vacuum hose off the flame trap assy.)., confusing the issue slightly.
If not leaking could it be burning? The trans shifts normally as long as there is enough fluid.
Also I have an 84 auto, would that trans fit the 91?
