Early Overdrive Switches 1800

Hi all, I was wondering, I recently saw a dash mounted overdrive switch for an early 1800....wasnt the swicth on the steering column? the one that just kinda revolved? Sorry for not knowing but I dont know the old models that well...The switch I saw had a nice chrome ring on it that said O-Drive..but like I said I thought they were on the column...maybe someone could give me a Overdrive Swicth 101 for early 1800's?..Thanx..L18
