AC trouble shooting: use Volvo shop or AC specialty shop? 200 1992

My last charge lasted a week so suspect big $ to fix. Should I use a Volvo shop or an AC shop to troubleshoot and give me the bad news? I suspect the worst and one shop said it can be up to a couple of thousand $US if it needs condensor/evaporator/accumulator. Any suggestions besides DIY to keep the costs down?
