The left strut on my GLT broke whilst on a recent journey. I had it replaced but then the slight shimmy I had been noticing before the incident became less tolerable. I asked the mechanic who had done the job and he recommended a wheel balance. When I took it to the tire shop, they informed me that I needed two new front tires because:
1. the tires showed considerable unevenness when the wheel was rotated before my eyes. I could see the tire surface moving up and down like a warped record.
2. the tires were eight years old. Anything over six years of age was deemed to be out of date.
Now, I have never before observed a tire rotating freely of the car so I took the tireman's advice and bought two new tires. He said the belt had shifted. Could be. What do I know. I kept the tires so that I could have them checked out by the store that had sold them to me. In this case, Canadian Tire.
My question: would you have changed these tires because of their age and bumpiness.
