Supposedly one can buy a D camshaft here. As I've never heard of this camshaft grind, I would like to find out what is known about it.
It appears that this camshaft was used in B21E engines (source here). I know that the E engines were the non-US, high compression versions of the B2XX block--usually that means that the engines were a little more powerful than their American counterparts. Was this true for the B21E?
Would a D camshaft fit in an M-cammed B230F? If the D grind is more aggressive, I might be interested in installing it in my currently stock engine.
HOWEVER, I've also noticed the K cam on that page, and I know this camshaft is practically the best thing Volvo installed in the 240s. It appears that the K cams offered for sale are from 1975--would a competent Volvo shop be able to install a K cam in a 1989 B230F?
I do know, though, that the B23E engines weren't made until 1981 or so--they definitely weren't around in 1975, so if the shop is selling a real K cam, that date must be incorrect. Is that a fair assumption?
Would the K cams go into a B230F without much difficulty? I know some parts of the engine (fuel injection, oxygen sensors) changed over the years, but I'm under the impression the parts relating to the camshaft are the same in all of the four-cylinder red block engines. Can a K-grind camshaft from 1981 (or any other year it was made) go into a B230F from 1989 without problems? Everyone seems to recommend the K cams as an upgrade, so I would guess so.
Lastly, would it be prudent to change the camshaft and nothing else about my engine? I had originally been considering purchasing ipd's VX camshaft and adjustable timing gear (bring the torque peak down a bit, since I've got an automatic), but it appears that I've suddenly stumbled onto a permanent online source for a K cam (no need to telephone people Canada or anything). Could I get the cam from TheVolvoSite and get a shop to switch the cam but leave the stock timing gear, and also change nothing else, and still feel justified in my expenditures? (I *would* be saving more than $250 with just a K cam!)
