16valve gle dead cylinder 900

I'm looking at a 1991 940gle 16v for sale right now. It has nil compression on one cylinder. The owner was told it was to do with valves and it sounds to me like a burnt valve. I've experienced these on the 8v engines but have no experience with the 16v engines. Is this a common problem? I've read about the oval valve guides- is this a contributing factor? This car is a one owner, very clean and seemingly well maintained car with 170k miles. Any thoughts or advice out there?
