What kind of exhaust system should I use on my brick

I have a 1988 244 that needs a new exaust system. I'm thinking about the performance system from IPD or the equivilent system from a muffler shop. I don't want the car to be a boy ricer type or get go crazy from noise. I'm not sure what would be the best method either upgrade or stay with stock. I plan on keeping the car for many more decades(forever). Unfortunitly, I probably can't afford stainless. Does the upgraded exhaust become annoying? Thanks and happy bricking.
