Hi,
My name is kyle. I am regestering as a user, but am waiting on the email.
my uncle gave me an 89 volvo 240 wagon. But it has a problem. Originally it seemed like the alternator. He would be able to drive it, but then it would die somewhere. When the battery was checked with a multimeter it would be dead. The battery could be charged and it would drive til it drained again. Replaced alt with a cheap auto parts store one. It was bad out of the box. the store replaced it a couple of times. I think it worked for a little while. But then he said it just wouldn't start anymore. Not sure if it would crank or not. A guy who works at a junkyard came over and got it to run. I know he replaced the air flow sensor, but neither of us are sure what else he did. It ran for a little while, but then it stopped working again. It would crank, but not start. I went to a junkyard and pulled a bosch alternator and the afs just incase. replaced them both. Still cranking, but not idling. Almost thought I heard it start up for a split second, but not sure. Then I drained the battery trying. Later with a charged battery it did the same thing, but then at some point it smoked at the battery or something, (I don't remember exactly what happened) Then it wouldn't crank anymore. It just clicked and smoked at the battery when I tried to turn the key. Tried to jump the starter/solenoid with a screwdriver. It whirled into action, but the car still didn't start. But that only worked once. After that it would only click and smoke at the battery with or without the screwdriver. I did change the afs around a few times more and can't even remeber which of the 3 is on there now. Is there any way to test them? And that's pretty much where I'm at now (home with 2 broken cars and one at the junkyard), although I haven't worked on it in a while. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kyle
