Rear axle shaft tube corrosion 1800

I am replacing rear axle oil seals on a '69 p1800s and noticed that the inner surface of the axle shaft housing (tube) has evidence of some corrosion and rust flakes. Since this space connects with the bearings on the differential, I was wondering if I should try to flush this material out somehow. It has occurred to me that this could actually make the situation worse if for example, I manage to flush some of this scale backwards into the differential housing and bearings. Has anybody out there come across this problem and if so, did you do anything about it? Am I worrying about nothing here?
thanks
