Helping out a friend: Ever heard of crankshaft pulley wobbling off?? 700 1987

My friend just called me needing help w/ his '87 740. He said that he'd heard a noise over the past weeks that sounded like the timing belt cover was rubbing up against the crankshaft pulley. Well, today, he noticed that the battery was drained down and the little battery lite was illuminated on the dash. He also said that the crankshaft pulley was very wobbly. He's having the car towed to his house...and then I'm gonna go over to see what the problem is. I think that this car has the B230F turbo engine. He says that the car will start and run, but I recommended that he not do that.

I'm thinking that if the timing belt were broken, then the car shouldn't even start. Looking at the Haynes manual has a nice picture of the crankshaft pulley, including the guide pin and pulley bolt. Have any of you ever heard of anything like this happening? What's your guess as to the cause?
