OD solenoid disfunctioning 200 1987

my 87 240 volvo with auto tranny runs only on 3rd gear because the OD relay and the solenoid are gone. To replace them cost half of the car itself and that is out of the question. I'd like to know if I can bypass or do something to engage the 4th gear permanently. Another word, make the solenoid open or close permanently. But I need to know which move. To open or to plug it?
Your help is life saver.
