Rattling noise from converter 200 1984

I have an intermittent rattling noise that seems to be coming from the converter on my 84/240 with B23F engine. The heat shield has long been removed, as has the rusted out front engine pipe bracket. I've read in this forum about loose "filters" inside the converter. Is this true, and if so is replacement the only fix?
