Cutting away old door panel to repair handle release rod 700

I've been having a lingering problem with the passenger side rear door not opening and we suspect that it is the clip that connects the handle release rod from the door release rod has come off, consequently the door will not open. So I found a matching door panel in the boneyard, removed it from the junker with no problem. Now, I'm probably gonna have to cut this old one off, enough to get at the handle release rod and finally open the door and replace it with my spare. I'm thinking to just use a box cutter and cut as much of the existing door panel away near the handle release until I can get the door open. Any recommendations or things I should look out for? I did keep all of the clips, lens cover (clip) and other small hardware from the old junker just in case.
