My 1992 740 is in mint condition and only used for vacation driving, so I don't think about the problem so much, but another post here reminded me of it, so here goes:
Two years ago I had the valves adjusted. Before that the car never leaked a drop of oil. The mechanic (who is *very* good otherwise) who did the work told me after he finished that someone had "smeared sealant all over the distributor" and he "did me a favor" and "cleaned it all off" for me. The distributor on this particular B230F is the obnoxious one hanging off the back of the valve cover against the firewall.
Somehow I suspect that a light bulb just went in many brains reading this post.
Anyway, ever since then, I'm leaking oil somewhere in the back of the motor. I'm pretty sure it's not the rear seal, as dealership service records indicate it was replaced about a year before I acquired the car.
Is this an easy fix? Should I just start smearing sealant everywhere around the distributor?
