Can I use a used receive/dryer? 700 1988

Another Volvo member who was involved in an accident and had his car totalled has a compressor and R134a retrofit kit for the air conditioning that he will sell me. However, he mentioned that he heard that the receiver/dryer won't work after it has been exposed to the atmosphere because it absorbs so much moisture. Is this true? Is there a way for him to cap the pipe leads so that no moisture can get in? Should I bother buying it?

He currently has it installed on his car and the AC worked beautifully before the accident.

Thanks,
Eamon
