I was wondering if the slow engagement of the overdrive on my car (83' 242ti) could be attributed to a low transmission fluid level. When cold, the overdrive will engage fine on the highway, but after everything warms up it takes a lot of effort to get the overdrive to engage. I click the button on the shifter and the green light comes on in the dash, but sometimes the overdrive will either not engage at all, or will take a very long time to engage. This is most noticable when at freeway speed, I have to let the car slow down to 55-60 and release the throttle all the way (basicially reduce the load to as low as possible), and it will engage. Once engaged it stays engaged under all conditions, including full boost uphill, the only problem is getting it to engage in the first place. This hasn't been a problem in the past, I used to be able to drop right into overdrive while accelerating hard at 75mph+.
Thanks for any suggestions or ideas. Hopefully it is something easy like low fluid level that I can tackle this weekend. Luckily I live in a small city and rarely have to drive over 50 so I barely use the overdrive at all, but on those 250 mile trips to visit the parents for the holidays the overdrive sure is necessary.
