Fuel Tank Sending Unit 200 1992

The 6 month old fuel tank sending unit in my wifes 92 245 appears to have stopped working. This happened about a week after I originally installed it. I removed the unit and found the float had a hole in it and it had filled with fuel. I tried sealing the float but may not have been completely successful. Any ideas on how to seal the float and maybe other things to look for before I open the tank again?
