steering rack boots 200

The boots that protect the steering (rack or pinion?) from road debris are rotten to nothing. Can these be replaced easily? How long before this becomes a problem?
The steering has been fine and strait, but I am worried this will accelerate wear.
I am replaceing the front brakes this weekend and would like to do it all at once.
