automatic overdrive solenoid replacement 200 1983

I am replacing the overdrive solenoid in my son's '83 240 turbo. It is an automatic. Can anyone tell me what is involved. How do you access the wiring in the shifter. How does the shifter come apart or is it necessary to take it apart? Where do the "O" rings go. I suppose this is all obvious when one tears into the project but I'm trying to avoid any surprises. Thanks Mark
