reconditioned carbs, now a hot starting problem 120-130

I went to collect my 1967 122S this morning, and was pleased with the run through the Suffolk countryside with my reconditioned carbs (swapped out the very sloppy ones) and an elusive 140 black air box. Seems a bit quieter, but not amazingly so.

All my joy was shot to heck the first time I stopped to get petrol when I couldn't start the car. Before the carb swap the car hot-started immediately, literally. But now it just cranked. I managed to get it started by flooring the gas pedal, and it took about 10 seconds. This can't be right.

I've done a bit of homework and come up with: fuel check valve, fuel pump, float bowl problems.

Has anyone had this and what might be the most usual culprit? Is there a trick of pouring carb cleaner into the carbs? But where exactly to pour it?

The person who did the swap didn't replace anything in the ignition, just checked the timing (9.5). He put engine oil into the dampers.

I hope we can find what's causing it. Thanks as always.
