745T 1991 Speaker Amp Wiring 700

Hope this can help others wanting to upgrade or modify their stereo systems.

If your car does not have speakers in the front doors and you install them only to find out they won't work as I did, you can install them and make the following wiring modification to activate them. Adding these speakers to the system is a big improvement for a small investment. Now that I have identified the wiring, it will be a snap when I upgrade my radio to an aftermarket unit.

I purchased two cheapo replacement 5.25 inch speakers from WallyMart for about nine bucks each. I removed the speaker grilles from the front doors (simply slide them forward to detach). I cut out the vinyl around the hole and using my speaker as a template drilled four holes into the door and mounted them using 2.5 inch #8 sheet metal screws. Place the speaker in the whole and move it around so you can get all four screws to land on the metal, one will be close to the edge. Don't over tighten the screws, just snug them up as the panel begins to flex inward. Ensure that all wiring stays away from the window regulator gear train. Be sure to replace the plastic hood/shield that protects the speaker from water.

The modification doubles the impedance the amp sees so it should not blow up. I initially connected them in parallel and the sound not as clean.

This should provide proper phasing, but you should check phasing with a nine volt battery.
Put the positive battery on the positve speaker lead and negative to negative and the speaker should move outwards. If you transpose the leads you will loose bass response.

FYI:
The dash mounted tweaters run off the reciever and we will not be dealing with them as these wires are located on the back of the radio on the long flat plug. See a full detail of all the wires in this plug at the end of this page.

In addition to the flat plug you will have a ground wire, the antenna wire and a round DIN plug. The DIN plug carries low level audio to the amplifier. These amps can be mounted in a few different places, mine was under the drivers side knee bolster to the left of the steering wheel, up high.

To remove the radio, locate the two small open slots on each side of the radio's faceplate. Reach in the slot with a slim flat blade screw driver and locate the shiny metal clip and flex it outward slightly while pulling the radio towards you. You may need to do both at the same time so another set of paws comes in handy.

end FYI

If your amp is where I found mine:
Remove the knee bolster panel under steering wheel. Three screws.
Remove tray metal tray next,, 4 or 5 screws.
The amp is located behind (above) the metal tray.
Unplug the speaker cable plug and locate the pairs.

To wire the left and right channel front and rear speakers in series:

Cut the wires (only the speaker wires, the other wires are power and ground) about 5 inches from the plug. on the plug end you will not be using these two pairs so tape them off:

To wire the left and right speakers in series:
