rpm sensor affected by bad rear oil seal? 200 1989

has anyone run into a bad rear seal affecting the r.p.m. sensor?I know that i have a leaking rear seal (trying to put it off till later).I just changed the sensor, due to rotten insulation, and I notice that the old sensor has oil around the tip, would this be causing drivability problems?it sometimes acts like the timing is off a little, and then straightens up after a couple of rev's.its not showing any codes other than the standard 1-1-1,just wondering if the leaking oil had caused any one else this type of situation?
thanks
