Painting an old car 200

I will confess this has to do with a (gasp!) non-volvo I am looking at buying for my daughter, but any advice here can be used by son for his old 240 as well.

We are looking at a 14-year-old car that is reportedly in good condition overall, but on physical inspection reveals serious need for paint. The car is not a collector item by any means.

I seem to recall reference on this board to success with paint shops like Earl Scheib. Is that so? How much work must I do in advance, and what can I expect them to do? What about quality of matching original paint?
