gas smell from a 90 wagon 200

there is a strong smell of gas on the out side of our wagon but not inside.
looking under in the gas tank area there is nothing visable no trace of leaking gas.is there a typical place they leak also is there any place or way to inspect the top of the tank arround the fuel pump with out dropping the tank out of the wagon?
